Slaying the Devils of Hatred & Prejudice
Slaying the Devils of Hatred and Prejudice is a bronze sculpture based on a dance performance by the Lydia Weissman Dance Group at the Westchester Community Center in White Plains, NY. The production was inspired by a children’s book “In Henry’s Backyard, the Races of Mankind” (Benedict, R. Weltfish, G. Henry Schuman. New York. 1948) The book concerns Henry, a little boy who dreams that all the races of mankind are in his backyard, only to awaken and find them fighting in his backyard because devils are telling them that they are all different. The book teaches Henry that all of us are more alike than different. The sculpture depicts the races of the world slaying the devils of hatred and prejudice using no arms and with hands gently turned down. Sculpture is in the collection of Marc Heller.
